Gather ’round all for the weekly Razzball fantasy baseball injury round up!
While I certainly did not mean to foreshadow the COVID-19 outbreak of this week in last week’s edition of Ambulance Chasers, I did. Oblique injuries are so “out”, and COVID-19 is very “in”. In fact, it is “in” a few MLB players.
Do you ever want to just scream? I sure do.
Let’s check out the damage!
American League Injuries
Chicago White Sox
Luis Robert (OF): Let’s kick it off with a pretty big but hopefully not serious issue– Luis Robert suffered a groin injury that appears minor. He did not appear on the White Sox roster yesterday evening. Gavin Sheets, AJ Pollock, Adam Engel, Andrew Vaughn, and a few other White Sox will see more playing time in Robert’s absence.

Anthony Castro (RP), Yu Chang (INF). Owen Miller (INF/OF), Cal Quantrill (SP): They may be the Guardians, but they have not been able to hold off COVID-19 IL. Kirk McCarty, Tanner Tully, Enyel De Los Santos, Gabriel Arias, and Konnor Pilkington have all been brought in to replace Castro, Chang, Miller, and Quantrill.
— AP Sports (@AP_Sports) April 20, 2022
Matt Manning (SP): Manning has a strained hamstring that has put him on the 10-day IL. Drew Hutchinson is expected to replace Manning.

Boston Red Sox
-Plawecki, Vazquez and Arauz are fully vaccinated
-Wong will catch today and tomorrow. Ronaldo Hernandez is here too
-The corresponding move for Hernandez is Rich Hill to the bereavement list
-Cora said he’s been at a hotel for seven days because one of his kids tested positive

Tampa Bay Rays
Toronto Blue Jays
Hyun-Jin Ryu (SP): Ryu, who is on one of my fantasy teams, has been tough to watch this season while experiencing diminished velocity. While I hate that he is injured, I hope even more that his issues are solvable. Ryu is currently dealing with forearm inflammation and has been moved to the 10-day IL. He began light throwing recently. Ross Stripling will serve in Ryu’s place.
#BlueJays injury updates:
– Teoscar Hernández (oblique) has started a hitting progression
– Danny Jansen (oblique) is continuing his rehab
– Nate Pearson (mono) is throwing live BP tomorrow
– Hyun Jin Ryu (forearm) began light throwing

Jose Altuve (2B): Jose Ow-tuve found himself on the 10-day IL with a strained hamstring. J.J. Matijevic was moved onto the roster to take Altuve’s place. Taylor Jones was subsequently moved to the 60-day IL to make space. Altuve has suffered from hamstring issues before. However, the extent of the current injury was still being evaluated.
The Astros have placed IF Jose Altuve on the 10-day IL today with a left hamstring strain…to take his place on the active roster, we selected IF J.J. Matijevic (#13) to the Major League roster…to make room on the 40-man, we transferred IF Taylor Jones to the 60-day IL.
Chad Pinder (INF/OF), Jed Lowrie (INF), Kirby Snead (RP), Lou Trivino (RP): It was a big news week for the Oakland A’s. As fans continue to ditch attending games, several A’s found themselves on the COVID-IL. Infielders Nick Allen and Christian Lopes and reliever Sam Selman were added to the A’s roster.
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) April 18, 2022
Kevin Smith‘s injury is a bone bruise that occurred after jamming his lower leg bone into his ankle bone on that slide Monday night. He’ll be in a walking boot and the A’s will wait for the area to decompress before getting him back into baseball activity.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) April 20, 2022
Stephen Vogt (C/1B): Vogt is out with a sprained knee. Other baseball players who have this type of injury are out roughly 2-4 weeks. However, there is no timetable for Vogt’s return right now.
Stephen Vogt has a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his right knee. No timeline for a return right now.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) April 21, 2022
Jon Gray is going to miss his next start because of a sprained left knee, this after he come off the IL on Tuesday after a blister. Glenn Otto will start Friday at Oakland on his normal turn. #Rangers

Luis Torrens (C/1B), Mitch Haniger (OF), Paul Sewald (RP), Scott Servais, Manny Acta: Another case of the COVIDS goin’ ’round! This is not what I means when I asked for “More kissing in baseball.” Anyway, Penn Murfree was called up to replace Sewald while he is out.
Three players, the manager, a coach and a good chunk of the tv/radio broadcasters and crew all hit with Covid for the #Mariners. Hopefully vaxxed with minor symptoms for everyone.

National League Injuries
Daniel Duarte was placed on the 10-day IL with elbow swelling. Alejo Lopez was called up from the taxi squad.
— Bobby Nightengale (@nightengalejr) April 17, 2022
Mike Moustakas (3B): Moustakas joins the 10-day IL again with a strained bicep. His injury is not expected to be “long term”. TJ Friedl and JT Riddle were called up to assist in Moustakas and Jonathan India’s absence. Alejo Lopez and Brandon Drury are also expected to help.
India said he felt fine and he would play if it were up to him, but he has to be built back up after missing four games. The Reds are optimistic he’ll be activated when he is eligible on Tuesday.
David Bell said they don’t think Moustakas’ injury is a ‘long-term’ thing.
— C. Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent) April 19, 2022
Tyler Naquin (OF): Naquin was placed on the COVID-IL 19 but the type of illness is currently undisclosed. Nick Senzl may play in his place.
Tyler Stephenson– Head- Stephenson was removed from tonights game after a collision at home plate with Luke Voit. He did not look like he lost consciousness but will still probably go thru the concussion protocol. S/O can have concussion like symptoms without being knocked out.

Nationals have selected the contract of reliever Erasmo Ramírez and placed Hunter Harvey on the 10-day IL with a right pronator strain. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, Ehire Adrianza goes to the 60-day IL. More bad injury developments for Washington.
— Jesse Dougherty (@dougherty_jesse) April 21, 2022
Sean Doolittle (RP): Doolittle has had a great start to the season, but he has experienced a sprained elbow that has put him on the 10-day IL.
Garrett Hampson (INF/OF): Hampson is on the 10-day IL with a hand contusion. He has been practicing throwing and catching. Hampson serves a number of positions including as a pinch runner for C.J. Cron.
#Rockies INF Garrett Hampson working at 1B while on the IL (right hand). If he can add that, whi h would make him everything except a catcher and a pitcher, he can, say, stay in a game after pinch-running for a 1B. pic.twitter.com/xNkChyrN1a
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) April 20, 2022
Los Angeles Dodgers
Andrew Heaney (SP): Heaney is on the 10-day IL with shoulder discomfort. Zach McKinstry replaces Heaney. Heaney, a seemingly formerly broken man, is on fire this season. Tony Gonsolin also been highlighted as someone who will step up in Heaney’s absence.
